Easy Steps To Calculate CGPA For University And Polytechnic Students

How to calculate CGPA for students in the university is different from that of the polytechnic students, although the approach is the same. The difference is in their grading system.

The grading system approved by NUC is different from that approved by NBTE for the polytechnic students.

The CGPA is the cumulative Grade Point Average of all the courses you registered for in the university or polytechnic. It can be said differently as the total grade points divided by the total units of the courses registered.

In this article, I will first discuss how to calculate CGPA for the university using the 100 level result of one of the FUTA students. The next one will be for the polytechnic.

Easy steps to calculate CGPA in the University

The NUC grading system for the university is

70 – 100 =  A  = 5 point

60 – 69  = B  = 4 point

50 – 59  = C  = 3 point

45 – 49   = D  = 2 point

40 – 44   = E  = 1 point

Below 40   = F   = 0 point

Also,

CGPA with Class of grade

4.50 – 5.0 – First Class

3.50 – 4.49 – Second Class Upper

2.40 – 3.49 – Second Class Lower

1.50 – 2.39 – Third Class

1.00 – 1.49 – Pass

The two tables above will help us in our calculation.

First Semester
university cgpa calculation
CGPA for first semester = 60/18 = 3.33 (Second Class lower for first semester)

Second Semester
university grading system
CGPA for second semester = 83/21 = 3.95 (Second Class Upper for second semester)

The final CGPA for the session = (total point in first semester + total point in second semester)/ (total unit in first semester + total unit in second semester) = (60 + 83) / (18 + 21) = 143/39 = 3.67

Using this model of calculating CGPA or GP, you can calculate your own Grade Point (GP).

How to calculate CGPA for Polytechnic

The grading system approved by NBTE is in the image below for polytechnic students. Either you are a student of MAPOLY, LASPOTECH, POLY IBADAN, etc. It is the same Grading format.

CGPA Calculation

70 – 100 = 3.50 – 4.00 = Distinction

60 – 69 = 3.00 – 3.49 = Upper Credit

50 – 59 = 2.50 – 2.99 = Lower Credit

40 – 49 = 2.00 – 2.49 = Pass

0 – 39 = 0.00 – 1.99 = Fail

Let me use the result of an accounting student from MAPOLY to explain,
polytechnics cgpa calaculation
The CGPA for the first semester = 58.5 / 20 = 2.925 (2.93, Lower credit)

I hope I have been able to show you in details how to calculate CGPA for both University and Polytechnic students.
