Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) Essay Competition 2022
The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) is receiving entries for the 2022 essay competition, and they are pleased to announce the theme for the #NES27 Essay Contest – “Securing Our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now”. The essay contest is open to all Nigerian undergraduates of any higher education institution (Nigeria or abroad) within the ages of 16 – 25.
With a market of over 200 million, coastal access to facilitate trade, and abundant human and natural resources, Nigeria has the potential to become a continental and global force that influences economics and policies. There is immense promise in Nigeria’s socio-economic potential. However, today the headlines about Nigeria do not reflect her economic promise. Instead, they dwell on insecurity, unemployment, poverty, insurgency, inflation, and overall uncertainty. As insecurity thrives in Nigeria, potential foreign investors are beginning to choose other countries over Nigeria, while some current investors are exploring exit strategies. Exit strategies are not limited to foreign investors alone. There has been a noticeable brain drain from Nigeria to countries like the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, predominantly in critical sectors like medicine, technology and academia. We stand at a cross-road in the history of our dear nation and our action or action will have lasting consequences on our future. Within this context, and to adequately articulate Nigeria’s priorities for laying a foundation to securing our future, the NESG calls for applicants for the essay contest.
This call is for innovative ideas that clearly demonstrate the urgency for a collaborative response by all stakeholders (government at all levels, private sector and the civil society) towards securing the future of our dear nation.
The importance of the proposed idea or policy should be clearly articulated, politically feasible, and compatible with the NESG’s guiding principles which include dedication to socioeconomic inclusion and shared prosperity, commitment to a free-market economy, encouragement of private sector investment, creation of an enabling environment, governance in the national interest, commitment to the rule of law, and establishment of an economic foundation for democracy.
