Universities Offering Biomedical Engineering in Nigeria
Biomedical engineering is a course out of many engineering courses in Nigeria that has not been explored by students in Nigeria. This course is not as popular as Elect/Elect, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, but it has a good prospect.
One of my readers asked me about the career prospects of this course, and I was not able to answer him in detail. So this article is to provide in detail what the course is about and its prospects.
If you are interested in the course, then there is a need to know what the course entails. In this case, Biomedical engineering (BE) is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and Medicine.
For example, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), BE started as a Unit, which was created to be primarily responsible for the repairs and maintenance of engineering facilities and installations within the College of Medicine. But now it has stood as a department in the university.
Shortly, I will give the list of Universities in Nigeria offering Biomedical Engineering and their admission requirements.

Where do they work?
According to the information provided on the Michigan Tech University website, BE
Work in a wide variety of settings and disciplines. There are opportunities in the industry for innovating, designing, and developing new technologies; in academia, furthering research and pushing the frontiers of what is medically possible as well as testing, implementing, and developing new diagnostic tools and medical equipment; and in government for establishing safety standards for medical devices. Many biomedical engineers find employment in cutting-edge start-up companies or as entrepreneurs themselves.
Although this discipline looks new, related to Medicine, and it has not been crowded, then any graduate of this course has numerous opportunities that await him or her.
Areas of specialization for BE
- Bioinstrumentation
- Biomaterials
- Biomechanics
- Clinical engineering
- Rehabilitation engineering
- Systems physiology
Lastly, I know some of my readers may be interested in Knowing the salary of Biomedical Engineers in Nigeria. The answer is not clear-cut. Because your salary scale depends on the company you will be working with and years of experience.
