Social work as a course is a very interesting and nice course to study in Nigerian Universities or any University in the world. This is so because it is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people.
There are seven (7) schools offering social work in Nigeria at both undergraduate and Master’s level. There is an Institute of social work of Nigeria which is a professional institute that mobilizes membership into a professional forum. The institute addresses more importantly professional practices as well as academic platform for addressing emerging social work issues in all ramifications.

Admission requirement
O’level result: Five SSCE credits including English Language and Mathematics.
(i) UNN requires Five O’ level credit passes which must include English Language and any three Arts or Social Science Subjects.
(ii) REDEEMER’S requires Five ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics and three subjects in Social Sciences or Arts.
(iii) UNIBEN requires five O’ level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Government, Geography or any other Social Science subject.
JAMB subject combination for social work: Mathematics, Economics/Geography and any other subject
Direct entry:
(i) UNN accepts two ‘A’ level passes plus UTME requirement.
(ii) UNIBEN accepts in addition to O’ level requirements either
(a) Two A’ level passes to include Government or History.
(b) National Diploma (ND) with at least an Upper credit-level pass in relevant discipline from a recognised Polytechnic or College of Technology.
(c) Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a Lower credit level pass in relevant discipline from a recognised polytechnic or college of Technology.
(d) National Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit –level pass in a Social Science subject from a recognised College of Education. In addition, candidates should have at least an overall merit level pass.
(iii) UNILAG accepts;
(a) Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/A-LEVEL subjects: Any three (3) of Economics, Government, Geography, History and CRS/IRS.
(b) University of Lagos Diploma in Social Development and Administration (SDA) with at least one year post qualification experience.
(c) Candidates must satisfy O/Level requirement.
