NUC/MDCN Accredited Medical Schools In Nigeria
Admission into medical schools in Nigeria is highly competitive due to the high number of applicants and the quota for each school is limited. Each medical school can’t admit beyond the quota that was given to them by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.
The Act (Medical and Dental Practitioners Act Cap 221 (now Cap M8) Laws of Federation of Nigeria 1990) sets up the MDCN. The mission of the council is to regulate the practice of Medicine, Dentistry, and Alternative Medicine in the most efficient manner that safeguards the best healthcare delivery for Nigerians underlies these Mandates.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN has the following mandates:
- Regulation of training in Medicine, Dentistry, and Alternative Medicine in Nigeria
- Regulation of Medical, Dental and Alternative Medicine practice in Nigeria.
- Determination of the knowledge and skills of these professionals.
- Regulation and control of Laboratory Medicine in Nigeria.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME). The main functions of the Commission are outlined as follows:
- Approving all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities;
- Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities;
- Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities; and
- Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities.
