Calcium soap making/ formation

The function of calcium carbonate as one of the soap recipe is very important to soap producer. It mainly acts as a booster or let me say to increase the volume of the batch process. Its application is very important as adding at the wrong time can lead to the disruption of the whole process. Calcium carbonate is not majorly used in cold process soap making method but in hot or semi-cold process.

The process start with making the lye solution, lye soap are more stronger and does not melt easily like other soap, that is why  lye soap is often called hard soap. The amount of lye dissolve depends on the volume of soap you want to make.  Dissolve 6kg (211.6 ounce) of lye in 19litres of cold water.

Palm kernel oil is instantaneously added to the lye solution and it is allowed to react with the added lye. Palm kernel oil benefits over other soap oil is it availability and cheapness compare to other oils. After about ten minutes or thereabouts the reaction between the palm kernel oil and the lye solution will become vigorous.

Soda ash solution of 7kg (245 ounce) in 20litres of water will be added to the mixture of palm kernel and the lye solution. The calcium carbonate of about 15kg (529 ounce) will be added to the mixture, followed by 4kg (141 ounce) of sodium sulphate.  Fragrance is added to taste. The whole process is then vigorously stirred to form a uniform mixture.

The whole mixture is then poured inside the Soap molds. The soap mold can be made of wood or plastic. The size of the soap mold depends on the size of the soap cutter. And the soap is allowed to cool for about 15 to 20 hours after which it can be cut to the desired sizes.

It is generally advised when making soap to use the necessary soap making kits, among which are:

  • Hand glove
  • Nose mask
  • Jungle boots
  • Long sleeve dress.
